Corporate housing: Great for vacations

How corporate housing is great for leisure and bleisure travel

One of the best things about the recent acceptance of more remote and hybrid working models is that vacation time has gotten a lot more flexible: Instead of being restricted to a single week at a time or an extended long weekend, holidays can be extended by working remotely. At the same time, the number of digital nomads has grown by 14-20% each year since 2020, meaning that more of us than ever have the opportunity to ‘work from anywhere’.

Statistics suggest that this flexibility in our work environment is a key reason why we’re doing more traveling, especially ‘bleisure’ (business + leisure) trips.

However, as any of us who live with partners, family members or children can attest, working remotely can be challenging. It’s hard enough to do it at home, let alone from a cramped hotel room while the kids are fighting over video games or your father-in-law is watching television or your partner just wants to get some sleep.

That’s where corporate housing can be a fantastic solution.

Corporate housing: Not just for relocations or emergencies
Corporate housing (also often known as ‘executive suites’ or ‘furnished rentals’) is furnished accommodation that provides everything you need for a comfortable stay, like fully-equipped kitchens, ensuite laundry and linens. It comes in all shapes and sizes, from studio apartments in downtown condos to 5-bedroom homes in suburban neighbourhoods.

There’s a common misconception that corporate housing is ‘only’ for business-related situations, like an employee relocation or extended business trip, or when you need a home for a few weeks or months due to a fire or other disaster making your own home uninhabitable for a certain period. But corporate housing can be a great accommodation solution for today’s digital nomads, as well.

More space, more privacy, more comfort
Because corporate housing properties are residences, not hotels, even the studio suites are larger than typical hotel rooms, and of course many of our townhomes and single-detached properties have basements, backyards and garages – giving everyone space to spread out and relax. It’s easy to find a quiet place to work, while your partner can be sleeping in one of the bedrooms and the kids are playing video games in the living room. Everyone has space and privacy.

Reduce your reliance on restaurants and takeout
If you’ve been considering an extended trip but have been hesitating because the cost of having to eat out for every meal seems prohibitive, corporate housing can be a great solution. With fully-equipped kitchens in every residence, including full-sized refrigerators and stoves, pots, pans, cutlery and glassware, you can cook and eat at home as you normally would. You’ll not only save money, but it’s easier to avoid junk food while accommodating specialized diets.

More reliable than Airbnbs
We’ve all heard – or experienced – the stories: You book an Airbnb, thinking it’s going to be a fabulous place to stay, only to find when you arrive that it’s not exactly like it was in the photos, or the owner is dropping by every 5 minutes, or you can’t use the backyard, or you’re hit with huge extra fees if you don’t take out the garbage the right way or clean the place top to bottom before you leave.

Corporate housing, on the other hand, is professionally managed and accredited, so there aren’t any surprises upon arrival. There are real people in the customer service department to answer any questions you might have, regular housekeeping, and you won’t see any surprise charges on your bill.

Cost-effective, especially for longer stays
You’ve probably noticed that as travel has increased since the pandemic, so have the per-night prices of hotels, especially in urban areas. If you’re traveling with family and need more than one room, hotels can put a real limit on your stay because it becomes prohibitively expensive.

Corporate housing can be anywhere from 30-60% cheaper than hotels, and that’s before you factor in the savings on things like food, laundry and parking.

A note on stay lengths
In Canada, the minimum length of stay in a corporate housing suite or home is dictated by local legislation. This means that while minimum stay lengths in Atlantic Canada are as little as 3 nights, minimum stay lengths in British Columbia are now 90 days. In other provinces, minimum stay lengths are determined by the municipality and the individual property.
